TED: Helen Fisher

Typically I try to stay on topic on my blog, but I couldn't help myself when I saw this talk on the TED website. I majored in neuroscience and psychology in college, and nearly majored in anthropology as well. One of my favorite books back then was Helen Fisher's Anatomy of Love. Moir & Jessel's Brain Sex was a close second due to my fascination with the differences between the brains of the sexes. Enjoy!

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a progressive, degenerative, systemic autoimmune disease that affects 1.5 million Americans, mostly women, and an estimated 1% of the world's population. Inflammation of the lining of the joints, as well as other organs, are characteristic. RA causes pain, fatigue, and permanent damage to joints and organs.

RA typically shortens the life span of patients by 15-20% from the date of onset. Though RA typically strikes in one's 30's or 40's, RA can appear at any time. Cardiovascular disease and infection are leading causes of death from RA; Rheumatoid-induced cancers are also often deadly.

We need a CURE, not just decades-long treatment of symptoms with dangerous, expensive drugs that do not always work, leaving many of us in chronic pain. We need awareness, understanding, and funds for research.

To accomplish these objectives we need to change the name of this disease. This is NOT your Grandma's arthritis! We, the patients, propose Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease, or RAD. Clearer, more accurate, with historical reference intact.
